As a part of Momentum OKC 2013, Erin Latham (Norman), Zachary Presley (Durant), and Matthew Kaney (Norman) received $2,000 Momentum Spotlight commissions to create new artwork. They are working with the guest curators PLUG Projects (Kansas City, MO) and Taryn Chubb (Ada, OK).

Zachary Presley: Project DescriptionI propose a performance piece in which I assume ten different poses as red “Toy Indians” modeled in the fashion of the classic green Army soldier toys. I will be painted to resemble molded red plastic, as will all the objects involved. My feet will always be on an Atomic Indian Corporation foot platform.  Each pose will depict a stereotypical view of a Native American., such as “Peace Pipe Indian” (Sitting with prayer pipe wearing stereotypical Indian tribal clothing)  and “Stoic Indian” (Standing pose with walking stick looking out upon the horizon wearing stereotypical Indian tribal clothing).
My work highlights the stereotyping and commercialization of Native Americans and their cultural objects. I created The Atomic Indian Corporation to embody the concept of selling “Indian-ness”. I collect so called “cultural relics” that are so far removed from their original purpose that they no longer represent any true relevancy. In doing this I illustrate how stereotyping and consumption dilutes both appropriated culture and the consumer.
